What is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) has been used since the 1940s to combat the symptoms of menopause—hot flashes, low libido, weight gain, mood swings, insomnia, and vaginal dryness. Traditional HRT combines hormones from the urine of pregnant horses with other synthetic chemicals, to replace the hormones that we lose as we age.
In recent decades, many women and some men have chosen to go with Bioidentical Hormone Therapy (BHRT), rather than supplementing with animal-derived hormones. BHRT was actually used in the 1930s prior to HRT but was supplanted by equine hormones because they were easier to extract.
Contemporary bioidentical hormones are plant-sourced and bioidentical to the hormones that our own bodies make. This means our bodies can’t discriminate between bioidentical hormones and the hormones secreted by our gonads.
Some of the risks of HRT remain, but many functional medicine practitioners believe that BHRT is safer and more bioavailable than HRT.
When you receive BHRT through Bella Lei, it’s not a “one size fits all” approach. Your bioidentical hormones are compounded specifically for you after we test your hormone levels. Our patients can receive BHRT in oral or topical form, and we work in partnership with Atkinson’s Pharmacy in Orange Park, Florida.
