When Should You Start Getting Botox?

When to Start Botox

We get asked all the time – “When should I start Botox?” “How early is too early?” “Is long-term use of Botox dangerous?”

when to start botox

First and foremost, research has repeatedly said that Botox is safe for long-term use.  While there is no “perfect age” to get started with Botox or other injectables, there are a few things to take into consideration: lifestyle, stress, exposure to sun, muscular strength, and genetics.  These factors, among others, all play a part in when you might potentially get started.

The use of Botox doesn’t avoid wrinkles completely or erase them altogether, but it can do wonders in preventative aging or slowing the process.  Botox (along with Dysport and others) is a type of neuromodulator used to weaken or freeze the muscle, preventing the lines from being etched into the skin.

For a 20-year-old who has no wrinkles, even after moving the muscles of the face, it would seem not all that necessary.  However, as we move into our late 20’s or early 30’s, the collagen production begins to slow and we have a few more years of expression under our belts.  Around this time, you may see a slight wrinkle around the eye, between the brow or perhaps on the forehead.  The creases may stick around for a brief time after laughing, being surprised, or frowning.  They are not static, meaning etched in the skin when the face is at rest.   This would be a great time to come in for a free consult and see if it is time to start preventative injections. Weakening the muscle with minor injections would be very beneficial in keeping those static wrinkles away for a long time! In this stage patients can generally get away with less Botox and go longer between injections because the wrinkles are just barely starting to form.

As we get into our 30’s we see the fine lines start to stick around and perhaps start moving toward the static wrinkles.  If you haven’t started yet, now is definitely the time.  Patients may need more Botox or shortened time between visits to stay wrinkle-free.  During this state, we are still preventing those deep creases from forming when the face is at rest!  And remember back to that Injectables vs. Fillers blog, there are different treatments for different needs!

Even if you are in your 40’s to 60’s, it is never too late to give Botox a try! And most importantly, YOU are BEAUTIFUL regardless of those annoying wrinkles!
